Sustainable Living Awards, 2016

On October 3rd, 2016, Sustainable Claremont held its seventh Annual Meeting and awarded certificates of appreciation for exceptional contributions to a more sustainable community in the following categories:

Lifetime Achievement in Sustainabilityto Marilee Scaff for being a champion of sustainability.

Sustainable Community Partnerto Pomona College for their pledge of $60,000 over 3 years for a Sustainable Claremont Executive Director.

Green Organizationto The Growing Club their community composting, urban farm, and citizen engagement.

Green Faith Based Leaderto Solid Rock Church for handing out 1,000 free LED bulbs at Claremont’s 4th of July, and volunteering with Green Crew.

Tree Championto Ray and Barbara Fowler for being long-time tree champions, nurturing trees and growing the Tree Action Group.

Sustainable Landscapeto Jennifer Stark and David Berke for promoting sustainable landscaping and sharing their beautiful garden on the 2016 Claremont Eclectic Garden Tour.

Energy Savings Champion:

  • to Brian Strack for long-time support as a dedicated energy volunteer.
  • to Patrick Mobley for enthusiastic participation in Walk the Town and initiating partnerships.
  • to BonnaSue for championing energy initiatives at Pilgrim Place.
  • to Pat & Carlos Samuelson for demonstrating leadership of energy initiatives in the real estate sector.

Energy Savings Champion Organizationto The Hixon Center for Sustainable Environmental Design at Harvey Mudd College for partnering to create an ongoing internship program for energy projects.

Green Schools:

  • to Chaparral Elementary School & Lisa Yamashita, Principal, for resuscitating the school garden as a environmental community effort.
  • to Claremont High School & Brett O’Connor, Principal, for drought tolerant landscaping design and completion.

Green School Champion:

  • to Cole Walker, Claremont High School Eagle Scout for rejuvenating the El Roble Intermediate School Garden for CUSD.
  • to Margaret Russell, Chaparral Elementary School Teacher for leadership in the resuscitation of the Chaparral Elementary School garden as a environmental community effort.
  • to Sheila Pompa, Chaparral Elementary School Green Team Leader and BLAST Teacher, for leadership in the resuscitation of the Chaparral Elementary School garden as a environmental community effort.
